Where is Denton? Denton is in Texas, in the North-East side. Compared to cities like Los Angeles and New York, it is a small city, with a population of 113,383 people. The history of Denton and it's expansion
While by no means a comprehensive history of Denton, it will give you some of the basics about how Denton was founded and named. How long has Denton around? Denton was formed around 1800. Denton stood out from the cities surrounding it from the beginning, with one separate fact: There is no record before 1800 indicating that there was a native Native-American population. The next major advancement came in the mid 1800's with the beginning of the European settlement. William Peters received a grant from congress in Texas, at which point he chose to transplant from Kentucky to Texas. At this point Denton was known as Peters Colony, being named after William Peters. The next big advancement came in 1846 when the legislature decided to rename Peters Colony to what is now known as Denton. Once the city was established, politics was sure to follow and in 1857, Denton was given the last county seat. By now you've probably figured out that Denton was a real person, John B. Denton. He was both a preacher and a lawyer. He was killed in battle in 1841 by one General Edward H. Tarrant while fighting against Keechi Indians. The cities first mayor was J.B. Sawyer.
Agricultural became the staple of the Denton economy, however two other business of cottages and the mills industries also developing. In 1881 the next growth spirit occurred with the arrival of the Pacific Railway, making Denton an important rail road connection. As predicted, the city grew and in 1890 Denton with the establishment of North Texas Normal College, Denton became a college town. North Texas College still exists, but it's name was changed to University of North Texas. In 1903 the second university was established called Girls' Industrial College now named Texas Woman's University.
Elevation, Weather and Population
Denton is called the Golden Triangle of North Texas, with Dallas and Forth worth being the other two points of the triangle. It's elevation is between 500 to 900 feet. Denton lies on the northeast rim of Bend Arch-Rort Worth Basin.
Denton has weather for everyone. In the winter you can have about 2.5 inches of snow, and the cold averaging 30 degrees. In the spring you'll have rain and the potential for tornadoes, although they are considered to be a rare occurrence. Remember that Texas is the bottom of Tornado Alley. Then there's summer, and it's hot and humid, with the normal temperature being in the 90's. Because of the humidity and warm weather, Denton is known as a subtropical city.
Denton's earned the label of the 10th fastest growing population between July 2006 and July 2007. It's census size in 2010 was 113,383 and continues to grow steadily over the last few years. In the rankings of largest cities in Texas, Denton ranks and 230 in the nation. Median income for men is $33,698 and for women 26,037. The median home/household income is $35,422.
